What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery, also called “augmentation mammaplasty”, is a procedure where implants are placed in order to enhance the size and shape of the breasts.
Why Choose Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is done to:
- Enlarge breasts that are naturally small
- Restore breast size and shape after pregnancy, weight loss or breastfeeding
- Restore symmetry when the breasts are asymmetrical
- Restore the breast or breasts after surgery
What Implants Are Better?
Dr. McDonald uses both saline and silicone implants. The choice is up to the patient. Patients opting for augmentation should keep in mind that implants are not intended to be lifetime devices. Implants last an average 10-12 years.
Saline implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution, like salt water. These implants can be filled with different amounts of saline solution. This affects the feel, firmness, and shape of the breast. If a saline implant leaks, the solution will be absorbed and expelled by the body naturally.
Silicone Implants consist of a silicone outer shell filled with a silicone gel. If a silicone-filled implant leaks, the gel will either stay in the shell or escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking silicone-filled implant may or may not collapse. Patients choosing this type of implant should carry out more regular checks with their doctor compared with those on saline solution implants. An MRI or Ultrasound can check the condition of the implants.
If you are researching breast augmentation and implants, you have probably heard about the recall of textured implants. Even though Dr. McDonald does not use these implants, you can learn more about the recall and BIA-ALCL here.
How is the Recovery from Breast Augmentation?
Following your breast augmentation surgery, Dr. McDonald will see you 1 day after and 1 week after. We suggest having the procedure when your schedule allows you to take 1 week off of work in order to focus on a restful recovery. In most cases your activity level will change very little.
